Apple watch messages only showing what I said

I got my watch a couple days ago and when I go to my messages app it only shows what I said and not what the other person said (looks like Ive been talking to myself). When someone texts me I get the notification that they texted me but when I go to that individual thread what they said it not there. Is there a fix for this?

Update: there is one person that I can see what they said and they said they are getting messages from my email and not my phone number.

If messages are coming from your email address then your phone number is not connected to your Apple ID. There have been posts here explaining how to fix it but unfortunately I don't remember what steps to take.
