I'm a longtime Nike+ user and now have the itch to get an Apple Watch. As I'm already invested in the Nike+ platform, I'm wondering how much of my exisitng gear will work with the new watch.
1. Heart Rate monitor - So the original Apple Watch is able to sync with a BT heart rate strap to gather HR data in lieu of the monitor on the back of the watch. I'm pretty sure that the Nike+ version of the AW will be able to connect these BT HR straps, but I already own the Polar Wearlink Nike+ edition. This strap is not pure BT, but works on Nike's flavor of BT they cobbled together years ago.
Otherwise, I'm looking at spending about $50 for a new Polar HR strap.
2. Footpod sensor - the old Nike+iPod system used a footpod to record stride information. In my experience, the footpod was more accurate than the iPod's accelerometer for getting consistent measurements. I realize the AW has accelerometer's as well, but it would be nice if it were able to link to the footpod for tracking indoor and treadmill runs.
Both of these compatibilities would indicate that the AW2 would be able to "decode" Nike's version of BT without the need of additional hardware like the old Nike+ dongle for the nano. Apple has set a precedent for this with the iPod nano 7, which doesn't have the 30-pin for the dongle, but did include BT. Amazingly, the nano 7G had the ability to read Nike's BT and use the footpod and the aforementioned Polar Nike+ HR strap.
