Apple Watch Notification Question

Ok, I am trying to get my Apple watch to notify me when I receive a text message while my iphone has an app running. While I am working I leave an app open but ti causes me to miss text messages since I am not looking at the screen. Is there a way to do this?
 
Not to my knowledge, NO. Apple Watch is designed to be an extension to the iPhone and which is why when your Watch takes care of your notifications your iPhone's screen stays off.
