I have an original Apple Watch. I have upgraded from time to time and now have the Ultra 2. But I always kept the Apple Watch 0 and from time to time would put it on charge. It is not paired to my iPhone and usually, because on some occasions I had let it go flat, it had not retained its memory of date and time. It was usually far out and for years I have never bothered about that, just concerned to ensure I keep the battery healthy. A few days ago I put it on charge and after a short time noticed it was showing the correct time date etc. Not happened before. It also now shows correct entries in the calendar and even in the music app the Playlists are right. I assume it connects to my iCloud account even though not paired to my iPhone or any iPhone but does anybody know if Apple have done something recently that just might have triggered this?

Did you just powered it on after it was in storage for years?

No. It sits on a charging stand behind my monitor and every so often I switch on the charger to keep the battery topped up. It has often gone flat though for a few weeks but what happened a few days ago is new. Not that I am concerned! Just nice to have it up to date with the time etc. without me having to pair it.

How long did you have it? You put it on nightstand mode?

Had it since new. Not on nightstand mode. It just sits on a charger and every few days if I remember I switch the charger on. When the watch bleeps I know it’s charged and switch off.

What iPhone was it paired to when you set it up?

Did you unpair it or directly transfer the pairing to the new iPhone?

FWIW, my wife has an old series 2 that she wore briefly many years ago. she no longer has the phone it was connected to, but about 6 months ago, I powered it back on & it was working., showing her calendar, texts, etc. Somehow it was still connected to iCloud (I guess, since it was not connected to a phone that has been in use in a long time) and was still updating.

Wow! So it was never unpaired at all?

Is the iPhone still there?
Yes I will have unpaired it from the phone. I do that when I upgrade the phone. I have had other watches over the years and will have unpaired the original from whatever phone it was piared to when upgrading the watch but I always kept the original.

I think, as another has suggested, it remembers its iCloud settings and is keeping up to date that way but this does not explain why it has only recently started to do this.
