Is it correct that Apple Watch Remote feature to control Apple TV works only via a turned on I Phone-in other words not with a Apple Watch stand alone hooked to wi-fi?????

Yes, with the iPhone connected to the same network.

Thank you for the responses. I don't see much benefit in using the Apple Watch Remote if the I phone has to be turned on. Might as well use the Apple TV remote on the I-Phone. My I phone is turned off most of the time when I am at home to conserve battery for I have the Apple Watch for calls.

Of course everyone’s use cases are different but for me, I sleep with my watch on and it’s convenient to be able to control the TV while my phone is on the charger for the night while lying in bed. I never turn off my phone so it works for me. I also have a TV in my bathroom and just take the Watch in the tub or shower with me to control it. Wouldn’t do that with my phone.

It would be nice to have that control while the phone is off though.
