Apple Watch S4 notifications

First off, I appologise if this issue has been over here but I have searched and came up empty.
I'm pretty sure I read this here already but had no Apple Watch at the time..

I have an iPhone 8 Plus and have previously purchased an Apple Watch S4 Nike Series.
I was almost sure that if I forgot my phone at home with wifi connection, I would receive call/message notifications on my watch (connected to the office wifi)..

Can anyone clear this up for me? Will it work or not?

Well, I don't have an "office" Wi-Fi, but when I'm at the gym, and connected to the gym's network, (Known to the watch), I get everything I would get if my phone wasn't in the locker. Short answer, for me, is yes.

Thank-you! I seem to be missing something because I've tested and I do not receive sms notifications.
I tried calling from another phone and got a missed call notification on my watch but did not receive messages or the message notification of the sms send from another phone to mine...
