For the first time in three years, there is a new Apple Watch SE.

Apple-Watch-SE-3.jpg

The budget-conscious Apple Watch SE 3 features an S10 chip, an always-on display, a new Sleep Score feature, Double Tap gesture support, wrist temperature sensing for retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep apnea detection, fast charging support, 5G support on cellular configurations, on-device Siri, and many other improvements.

Here is how the new Sleep Score feature works, according to Apple:
Sleep quality is influenced by several factors, such as sleep duration, bedtime consistency, how often a person wakes up, and how much time is spent in each sleep stage. With sleep score, Apple Watch helps track each of these categories to offer users a transparent and easy-to-understand metric for their overall sleep quality. After each night, sleep score provides an overall score and classification in the Sleep app on Apple Watch, plus a clear breakdown of the most critical components so users know what to prioritize to improve their sleep.
Apple Watch SE 3 is available in Starlight and Midnight, in 40mm and 44mm sizes. In the U.S., pricing starts at $249. Pre-orders begin today, ahead of a Friday, September 19 launch.

With watchOS 26, which will be released on Monday, September 15, the Apple Watch SE will support the new Workout Buddy feature powered by Apple Intelligence.

This seems like a really solid value. I'm torn between getting an Apple Watch SE with cellular for my 6th grader who needs some cellular connectivity for calling us for various after school activities, or if I should try to hold out for another year and get her a used iPhone. Don't really feel like a 6th grader needs a smartphone, but she says most of her friends have one. If I get her an SE, it might hold her off on bugging me about it for a couple more years and save some money on the phone bill, lol.

I was thinking of updating my S7 with a S11, but after the rumours that the S12 would bring Touch ID and a new design, I was going to wait.
But now with the SE having the same screen size as the S7-S9, and most importantly AoD (to me that’s a dealbreaker), I’m going to think whether I should go with the SE3 instead. Need to see how much the larger model with LTE (or 5G, rather) will cost in Europe. I think I’ll miss the Blood Oxygen sensor though (I’m assuming the SE still lacks it), but if I could get it for around €400, it would be tempting

EDIT: it appears that the screen is still 40 and 44mm after all. There goes my hope. The pricing was pretty sweet through. €359 for the 44mm with cellular was pretty good

Wow, that’s a very good update and improved the value for money factor. Even though this just tanked my S6 value for resale, I might even consider SE over 11 now.

I'm debating getting my 2nd grader a Fitbit Ace since I can have full control of her kids Google account but this SE 3 for my parents for health tracking is a great deal I think for $249

Get her an iPhone, c'mon.
She's a 6th grader already. I'm amazed she doesn't come home crying because of bullying.

I'm amazed. I didn't expect SE 3 to be that good.

Good for you on not giving a smartphone to your daughter. The more we learn about smartphones & social media for children, especially girls, the grimmer the outlook is. Go read "The Tech Exit" by Clare Morell, find some like-minded families, and hold out as long as you can! You won't regret it.

If this Apple Watch is capable of cell phone calls by itself, without a smartphone (I don’t know, I’ve never had an Apple Watch), it’s definitely the right tool for a kid.

If a 6th grader is an 11 year old child, the phone bill is the last thing you should worry about giving open, unrestricted, unsupervised internet access. I mean, sometimes I get the feeling most parents haven’t used the internet like a younger person would, but there are many dangers to a child’s mental and sexual health out there, accessible either through the browser, through social media apps, or now through the use of AI. The safest way to introduce a child to the internet is through a supervised internet connected PC in a shared environment such as the living room.

Keep in mind that most of us who were born before the 2000s had Internet access while we were almost adults, with a well developed brain at 17 or 18 years old. What’s happening now to kids being exposed to such intense stimulus at such early stages is something unprecedented and with unknown consequences…

You could, of course, buy her a feature phone, but that will make her be pointed by her classmates. Little does she know, that the ones doing the wrong thing for their age, are their classmates and not her. And that, ultimately, the responsible of all of this, are the parents, teachers and education institutions that allow this.

We got my (currently) 8th grader an Apple Watch SE 2 at the end of 6th grade, he had a Verizon GizmoWatch before then. Its been excellent so he can keep in touch with people while minimizing distractions (no youtube, social media, games, etc...). I put a clear polycarbonate case on:

I've had to replace those cases maybe 4-5 times in the past two years (I always keep a spare on hand), but no damage to the watch itself it looks pristine.

You can get a standalone watch plan - using "Apple Watch For Your Kids" feature. No bullying issues. Other friends' parents have gone this route as well to keep their kids from getting hooked on social media/etc. He's on basketball, football and baseball teams and other teammates use them as well as phone alternatives.

I'm looking to get an SE3 cellular for my 17yo high schooler now that phones are banned on campus due to the distraction they pose. But they will allow watches. Currently she has an old Apple Watch series 3 that works great on the school's Wi-Fi - no cellular needed, but this one is paired to her phone.

Damn, still no blood oxygen sensor? Now that’s a deal breaker for me. This could be a good first Apple Watch for me but honestly for me the oxygen sensor is important.

But they not. They are still Series 4-6 screen size.

I think this is the model most people should buy. I have the 9. I like it. But I use it almost entirely for Apple Pay, glancing at the time, and glancing at texts. The SE is more than enough for that.

This is overall a pleasant surprise to me. New chip was a given, fast charging & gesture controls powered by the S10 could be inferred, but I genuinely didn't expect Always On Display considering Apple's notorious strategy of locking features behind more expensive devices. The S4-S6 case is a little disappointing, but I suppose a noticeably uglier/bulkier case than the S7-S9 case that some people even prefer over the S10-11 is the main push Apple is relying on to draw people to the Series 11.

I personally think I'm going with the Series 11 for my first Apple Watch, but I am also already watching the SE3 for a price drop to get for my dad to upgrade from his old Fitbit.

Just checked again and you are absolutely right. Thanks for the heads up! The way it was rumoured that they were going to be 41 and 45mm seemed it was pretty much a given. 🙁 In that case it seems my S7 will have to last for one more year. Or maybe I’ll find a good deal on S10 leftover stock from third party sellers!

Credit to them for giving the SE Always-On-Display. I thought Apple were going to be greedy and keep that market-segmentation for a while yet.

It’s a great bargain and like the 16e, it’s a MVP of the modern Apple Watch.

Only criticism is that they could’ve used the s6-9 chassis and slightly larger display sizes - & smaller bezels!

But then the justification for buying the s11 would be vanishingly small (blood oxygen, ecg and the bigger screen with small bezels, pretty much).

One last thought. Apple loves showing the se always with the saturated filled in watch faces and apps - to show off its sizeable bezel.

Nice new features, but I'm disappointed the SE 3 is keeping the same old Series 4-5-6 design as the SE 2. After three years, Apple could have upgraded it to the Series 7 design (which isn't exactly recent itself). But I guess that was too much to ask. Personally I would have sacrificed one or two new features in exchange for the newer casing.

Just my two cents, but if it's your first Apple Watch I suggest starting with the SE 3. See whether you like the Apple Watch experience overall (probably, but you never know). If you do, you can hand it down to your father next year while upgrading to Series 12. You'll also have experience if he needs your help to figure it out.

Can you toggle the display to just turn on when you flick your wrist, and if so, I wonder how much it would affect battery life?
