I have a plantronics bb fit Bluetooth set of earbuds and on my series 0 I either had to wear my watch on my left wrist because the Bluetooth was weak and couldn't handle running outside, or use powerbeats wireless because the power is on the left side on those unlike most headsets.
The series 2 seems to have the same problem. I'm fairly confident that the airpods will work fine and plan on buying them anyway but Apple should have fixed this problem. They had to have tested it outdoors with some of the leading brands of earbuds.
This problem only happens outdoors. Some of you who use treadmills will not experience this unles you run outdoors.
