I’m new to Apple Watch. Been told I can’t keep my phone on me at work so was looking at this for a solution.

How does it work? Does cellular have to be near your iPhone? Can you use internet like safari or any apps like WhatsApp? Can you write notes ect? Does it play music? What else can you tell me about Apple Watch?

And what about camera does it have to be near the phone?

Apple Watch is essentially your iPhone accessory and notification device, as well as a temporary replacement of your iPhone for receiving phone call for cellular Apple Watch.
To use cellular feature, iPhone does not need to be nearby. In fact, cellular is to enable Apple Watch being used somewhat on its own.
You cannot browse internet like what you can do on a phone. watchOS 6 has enabled more advanced web viewer for checking links in mail. But it is not a substitute of safari on iPhone.
App support highly depends on the developer. But don’t expect writing notes on your watch. Simply impractical.
You Can listen to music on Apple Watch. Either by syncing your iPhone music to Apple Watch, or stream from Apple Music. I recommend syncing because it won’t burn your mobile data much.
As for everything else, I can’t list all of them, and you have to play around yourself.

Time to find a new job I think OP

I think the watch will provide a lot of what you want, but it won’t be the full substitute.

If you buy from Apple, you have 14 days to return it if it’s not what you wanted from it.

As long as you have a good cell connection, your phone doesn’t need to be nearby. You’ll get notifications and you can send/receive email and iMessage, and stream music (or play directly off the watch’s internal storage). Not sure about other apps like What’sApp and Facebook Messanger without the phone nearby - I don’t use them personally.

Not every app supports fully unteathered cellular functionality. It’s up to the app developer to implement it.

There is no web browser (there’s some tricks to browse a link, but for all practical purposes, there’s no real web browser). Apple doesn’t include a Notes app, but there are others including Google Keep and Microsoft OneNote. Apple‘s Reminders, however, is included.

Be aware that the watch will only last around 5-6 hours running off cellular-only. The cellular circuits are very power-expensive, so don’t expect it’ll replace your phone for the full day. If you have WiFi at work, it’ll last much longer. Bluetooth is the most power-efficient, but you said you can’t have your phone on you, so that’s not an option it seems.

Not sure what you mean by camera — there is no camera on the watch [edited].

If you have WiFi calling on your iPhone and connected to WiFi, it will still work with poor/no signal if you’re somewhere else completely and the watch is picking up cellular.

Yes, there is no camera on the watch. However, there is a niche remote camera app that connects to iOS camera and show whatever iOS camera sees. It can be used as an interesting view finder assist but that is pretty much about it.

Yeah, but I wasn't sure what the OP was asking. "And what about camera does it have to be near the phone?"
