So, my Apple Watch has been acting up the last 2 weeks or so and drastically over counting my calories while either sitting around or walking (if I log it or not). Today for example I went on a normally paced 17 minute walk and by the time I hit the end of the block (about 3 minutes) I was at about 100 active calories. The walk as a whole was just shy of one mile and it said I burnt 361 total active calories. Which as you can see, it seems to slow down a bit as I was averaging around 100 calories every 3 minutes at the start. The path I walked I walk often and typically in that walk it should be around the 150 calories.

I stopped logging that walk when I sat down to get lunch. I then stopped logging any other walking I was doing to see how the watch tracks it without me doing the fitness app. I’ve tried this before and it greatly overcounts there too. It’s now 5pm and I am at 1,937 calories burnt and the only exercise I’ve had today was walking a total of 4.5 miles.

I sleep with the watch on and got up at 8am and saw I somehow burned about 80 calories while sleeping from 12:30am to 8am. Typically I’d wake up to maybe about 30-ish?

I have totally reset the watch several times to mixed results. Yesterday for example seemed to work just fine after resetting it the night before. Hit a total of 1,223 calories with 3.1 miles walked and about 40 minutes on the exercise bike. I do remember a 2 mile walk I registered started off a bit fast (that same end of the block test was about 70 calories instead of today’s 100), but it eventually slowed down to a normal tracking. That clearly went away when midnight hit and I burned 80 calories while sleeping.

Here’s one last odd one. It only over counts when I’m inactive or walking. I returned to my gym last week and an 11 minute walk to the gym was 224 calories burnt. When I was at the gym I kickboxed 10 rounds, 5 minutes each, and between rounds did either 20 push ups or sit ups. That strenuous 62 minute exercise? 673 calories burnt. Honestly, knowing how it over counts walking I was expecting 3,000 calories burnt.

Has anyone else had this problem? WatchOS is up to date, no weird apps tied to my Health app that are logging anything extra while I’m going about my day. Got an appointment at the Genius bar tomorrow and with no Apple Care and it being out of warranty it’s going to cost $299.99 to replace the damn thing. Hoping maybe someone knows something I can do besides daily resets that may fix it?
