It basically says a day before normal shipping method. Is it worth the extra cost or will it really only be a day before ?

Whether it's worth it to have anything delivered a day sooner depends entirely on your needs and desires.

And if it says that it'll be delivered one day earlier than standard shipping, why would you expect it to be anything other than one day earlier than standard shipping?

I take the Apple shipping with a grain of salt. My recent Series 6 purchase had a March 11 delivery date on Apple's website, but the UPS site had it, and delivered it, on March 3 - quite the difference!

Apple is always striving to get their products into the hands of as many delighted customers as quickly as possible.

if they're waiting for stock to come in (backordered), they'll typically pad the result a bit and tell you a later date than what they expect, so if it shows up when they think it will you think it's early and are extra happy. And if it does show up late, you still think it's on time, and are happy. It's not till it's REALLY late that you start to get un-happy.

Plus it tends to whip up some buzz, since "supplies are slipping to mid June"

Which is great… when you can be at home on both the date of delivery and the Apple date.
