I purchased my first ever Apple Watch, series 7, 41 mm, cellular and GPS (but not associated with a cellular carrier yet).
It arrived completely dead. Pressing buttons did nothing. I plugged it in and after a while it showed what I've learned is called the "Red Snake." I can't remember how long that was, and then it eventually I think was a green snake, and then it charged normally. I charged it to 100% before using it.
I am homebound and often bedbound and I used it very little, just poking around the interface a bit, and each time I saw the battery drop very quickly to 0 within 6 hours. I would then charge it again and it would do the same thing. I then left it overnight wondering if it might "top it off" even though it was at 100%. I am not sure if it was that or the number of charges after it being completely dead, but it now has better battery life; however, I've done nothing at all to put it through its paces, and due to how it was out of the box I feel like I have a warped sense of how long it should last. I mainly wanted it for emergency calls and fall detection. I don't leave the house often, and I am not really sure yet how to test it in the limited time I have to test it before making a decision to know whether it is working correclty.
Unfortunately due to an illness flare up I opened it late after it arrived and I am close to the return deadline. I actually thought the deadline had passed, but I do have a little time left to return it--but another wrinkle--due to it being a "high risk" item it has to be returned in store (Target) despite me having purchased online--I should be able to find someone to go for me, though.
The other thing is that I measured my wrists before purchasing and they are 7 1/2", but this barely fits on the last notch (I wear it to the left of my wrist bone on my left wrist).
So I bought another one from Costco.com (the 45 mm) and will compare, but I really feel like the size of the case of this is already quite large for me (I've never worn a watch before). The 41 mm was a better deal than what the Costco one was.
Anyhow, trying to think what I should do. This was a very good deal. The Costco one is a deal, but not quite as good, and will have to see how I fare with 45 mm which looks gigantic in pictures I've seen. But if I keep this one which I like the case size of but the band is stretching its limits, I will not be entirely sure about the battery.
Is there a thing where after being completely depleted it takes several cycles to return to normal battery life?
I called Apple and they ran a remote diagnostic that said the only issue was needing a software update (only 0.1 versions up) and they were sure that was the cause of the issue--but Apple always says that about software updates. I did the update. They said there is a battery test but no need to run it due to everything else coming back normal--the more general test they did showed 100% battery health, which i can also see on the device itself. They said I had gone through 6 complete charge/discharge cycles which sounds right to me. One strange thing was in setting up the remote diagnostics it listed my Apple Watch on my phone as a 42 mm Apple Watch, despite being 41 mm. She said she could see though via the serial number that it was the 41 mm Apple Watch Series 7. So maybe an iOS software glitch.
This Apple Watch was a good deal, but leery about keeping something if it only has decent battery now because of having gone through several charge/discharge cycles after being in a completely depleted state on arrival, plus I don't even know how to gauge what is normal battery life really not having had an Apple Watch before. On top of all that, I'm still learning how to use it--which I know sounds a bit odd--but it's surprisingly complex I would say. I feel like this is a device you have to learn a bit to make your own. I like a lot of the features, but they're sort of buried in complex ways (At least to me) and I need to surface them to the watch face with complications I think. Just having two side buttons is causing a learning curve (the crown and the other one).
Sorry that I'm probably all over the place. I'm chronically ill but been acutely ill and it's made everything more stressful.
