so as title suggests worth upgrading from a series 7 to 8 for the SS model? or would it be better to just pick up a used SS series 7?

Depends what you want from it. Comparing the 2 it looks like the only difference is crash detection and a temperature sensor. I’m trying to find a new series 7 for a discounted price. I don’t want to be “that guy” but the series 8 is pretty much just the series 7

No, pickup the refurbished Series 7 Graphite SS from the Apple Store. It's already taken the big hit on resale value.

$749 for two features that are practically useless to you is not worth it. You already have car crash detection on your iPhone 14 and if you're a man, the temperature sensor doesn't do anything at this time beyond providing a data point you can look at in the health app.

I also don't see the Series 8 being worth much more than the Series 7 in the future.

I did the same, just bought a AW7 SS Graphite off the Apple Refurb site for US$549. To me it’s a great value, $200 less than the same AW8 and the additional features weren’t worth it for me. Still comes with a new battery (almost assuredly though not guaranteed I think vs iOS devices), and like-new. I just got mine this past week and it came looking mint.

There’s still availability for the 41mm and 45mm Graphite SS (with Blue Abyss sport band, which I didn’t need as I have a graphite milanese loop from prev AW5 that I’d use it with) on the Apple Refurb store now for US$509 / $549.

I am on an Space Black SS S4 and was considering going to an S7 Gold SS refurb since they are $200 cheaper, but now that Apple has updated the S8 SiP tech specs to note that all models (Ultra, S8, SE2) have Bluetooth 5.3 I decided to go with the S8 SS in Gold (picking it up at the Apple Store in two hours) since I also have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and Air Pods Pro 2 on the way so everything will be on BT 5.3.

I saw they changed the comparison page but the technical specifications still say Bluetooth 5.0. I wonder which is right?

I suppose it make more sense if all S8 SiP had the same specs.

That's interesting - I just went down a mini-rabbit hole seeing what's new in BT 5.3. It doesn't seem to be particularly important in very limited reading - is there something particular about it that you think is helpful? Or is it more a nice-to-have-everything-on-same-standard type of thing?

Bluetooth 5.3 (well 5.2 but Apple skipped that) adds in low energy audio, so assuming your headphones and streaming device both have it you should see longer battery life when listening to music.

Evidently Bluetooth will downgrade itself to whatever the lowest version is supported on the connected devices so I want my iPhone, my Apple Watch and my Air Pods Pro all on 5.3 so that all of the features (including the ones outlined by @james2538) are enabled as those are the three devices I generally have actively connected.
