I’m playing upgrade to the series 11 Apple Watch. I have the series 9 45 mm titanium. I’m not sure if this is the correct size or should I get the 42 mm Apple Watch series 11 titanium

There is no such thing as "correct size".
If you like your current one, the new one is 1mm larger, if you are really in doubt, visit an Apple Store or Best Buy and try both sizes on...

In a similar position too can't decide on size. I tried an AW10 42mm and this is what it looks like. One picture is looking down at the watch on my wrist and the other is holding my hand on my stomach towards a mirror and taking a picture in the mirror. The first picture looks good but then I think it looks small in the second picture. Wrist size is 15.5cm. I've seen a few videos on YouTube which indicate this is this right size for my wrist. I also prefer a smaller device as this is my first watch.

I agree with you. The left looks perfect, but the right looks too small IMO. In the first picture, the top and bottom of the watch fill your wrist width, but in the second one there is a huge gap. If it was me, I would go large - you have 21 days return anyway.
