I have the original ultra running the latest watch OS and over the past few weeks digital crown/scroll wheel sometimes does not work with messages and I have to turn it off and on again to get it working, but then sooner or later it will stop working again. What’s weird is I've only noticed it with messages, it appears to work fine with everything else.

Has anyone has anything similar and can suggest a fix please? It seems like it's app related rather than the crown itself, but my wife is running the same OS (but on a series 4) and she's not had any issue 🤷🏻‍♂️

I rarely use the Messages app on the watch - basically I use message notifications to do anything with messages, but that's still rare - I will almost always use the phone (or another device, like an iPad or Mac) to read and write messages. So, of course, I can't say that I have seen this.

But rather than power-cycling, you can always try force-quitting the messages app. Double-click the crown to show cards for apps used in reverse chronological order, swipe left on the card for the messages app, tap the large red "X" delete control, press the crown to go back home and try running the messages app again.

Plus, of course, you can swipe up and down on the screen rather than scroll with the crown in a pinch.

Thanks, the closing the app down and restarting works which is much quicker than the reboot process so thanks for the suggestion.

I'd still like to know why it's doing it though so that I can fix it.
