So this is how it goes down; My Wife's series 2 38mm developed a display crack some time ago (out of warranty), so I declined to get it repaired at the price quoted. She continued to wear the device, and of course it slipped out of her hand and hit the countertop (18" drop) which caused an "impact damage" crack to appear.
So, when the free replacement memo came down, I naturally went to my local Apple Store. After their inspection, and me telling the history of the watch, I was turned down to be covered by their warranty.
So, I get that the damage is impact related, but was the display already compromised enough that the "counter drop" exacerbated the damage?... would it have survived the drop without the original stress crack?
I don't know, and they (Apple) don't either... so I suppose it just gets left to; their word against mine... and who am I [ret]

Cheers

This is a tough one, but I guess my question is why doesn't everyone get Apple Care? The repair prices are insane and I think mine costs $79 for the Hermes version which is a no brainer to me. The bigger thing for me is the advanced replacement (because I'd hate to be without my watch for a week while they repair it).

Kind of taking this thread on a tanget but...

Applecare on an Aluminum watch ($69 USD) to me makes no sense, after deductible you're almost half the price of a replacement watch; I'd rather take my chances. For Hermes ($79 USD) make a lot of sense.

I paid $1,200+ for the Hermes my series 3 aluminum was less than $400.

I guess that makes sense. But if you need a replacement watch not due to damage the only way to get an advanced replacement is with Apple Care. That alone is worth the cost for me.

True (or at least I agree), but AC on an S2AW would have run out years ago in most cases. (I'm not sure when Apple stopped selling refurbished S2 watches, which you could have gotten AC or AC+ for.)

In the end its not a life changing situation, I just had to let a little steam off about it... you see, In my own [small] mind I was hoping for a better outcome, after all, I've been a loyal customer since the "LC" computer ;)

The problem is, can you prove that the watch had the crack covered by Apple now before it had an impact? Apple know what they are looking for and if the damage does not meet the criteria it won’t be covered. I would imagine lots of people claiming who are genuine and those who damaged it accidentally but claim it was defective anyway.

how to prove it?

Well, I can't prove it now, unless Apple has a log of my original visit re the first small crack... the one I declined to get repaired at my cost

And even then advanced replacement is not guaranteed. I just sent in my S4 for repair because the ECG function wasn't working. I was told that because the problem involved the ECG, FDA regulations would not allow an advanced replacement.
