My watch is taking 17 hours to download watch os5 I tried rebooting it and no joy? Just purchased the watch today so I can’t even try it

If it's activation locked then you won't be able to pair it or update it.Very common thing to happen with a 2nd hand watch.

It’s a series 1 model it was brand new and sealed though nobody had used it before. Situation is it said 20 mins about an hour ago and now slipped back to 2 hours now 3 hours. Bit pointless having a watch I can’t use should I take to an Apple store?

Series 1? How old is it? I know you say it’s new but it must’ve been sitting in a box for a few years?

Says 2016 on the box and yes must have been kept on a box a few years. I thought I could plug it in and use it right away never had this issues with iPhone or iPad. Seems iTunes won’t take it only the iPhone app.

I wonder if it’s struggling speed-wise as well because it’s a very slow watch, certainly compared to more recent models.

I would have thought some people would have still had one to know a fix for it?

For some reason it won’t even let you cancel the update and use it as before

Madness I downloaded the software it finally worked after 5 hours loaded and installed and then it came up software update to 6.1.3 anybody tell me what the heck is going on? Why wouldn’t it just load the latest software right away?

You probably downloaded an older version since this has taken so long. 6.1.3 is a fairly recent release.

It’s because there’s something called dependencies in software development. Your watch had such an old version of the OS that it had to download the version that can bring it to the modern era so to say, then once it’s got all the dependencies available in the new software it checked with the server again and found another update to bring it to the latest version.

Will be interesting to see if this one goes on quicker...?

Same thing happens on a Windows computer that hasn't been turned on for a while. It checks with the mother-ship, downloads what updates it can, reboots, repeat ad infinitum. I've had computers that have sat for a few months take all day to update. Watches are computers, and a Series 1 is four years old. Lots of updates for it to unravel. Patience.
