Today i just purchase a apple wireless keyboard. then i just found out the special buttons (volume, play/pause, etc) don't work. can i get them to work. running 10.5.8 on powermac g5.

Probably, but it is included in 10.6.8, though when the keyboard was released, Macs were still running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, but the current iteration/generation needs 10.6.8. Maybe you can get your hands onto an older model, that only requires 10.5.

I have a post-Lion Bluetooth keyboard with my PowerMac G5 and all of it's function buttons work correctly. I did have to install that, but Software Update caught it and installed it for me.
