Apple Wireless Keyboard Questions

So, I got the new(ish) wireless keyboard from Apple, off of Craigslist yesterday. I got it for $40 . Apart from it being the best keyboard I have ever used, I was just wondering what is the matte-like strip on the back next to the power button. It took a bit to get used to the size, I am now an ex-user of the Apple Pro Keyboard and there is a huge difference but I think that I can cope .

The batteries don't extend that far.

The poster was put in time-out and his posts were deleted. Making useless posts just to bump your post count is an instantly bannable offense, according to Forum Rules. Some forums require a minimum post count before you can participate, but useless posts aren't the way to get there.
