Apple Working on Under-Display Touch ID, Could Debut in First All-Screen iPhone

Apple is continuing to research under-screen fingerprint sensor technology for an iPhone with a view to re-introducing Touch ID in its first full-screen model, according to a new rumor.

Ever since Face ID debuted in 2017's iPhone X, Apple's roadmap for Touch ID on iPhones has been murky at best, with some industry observers suggesting that Apple considers Face ID an exclusive all-in-one biometric solution going forward.

It's no secret that Apple has been working on a Touch ID system designed to be set under the display since at least 2013, with several patents awarded to the company over the years. However, despite claims that under-screen Touch ID on a future iPhone is unlikely, Apple has, if anything, intensified its research in under-screen fingerprint sensing technology.

Just this week, Apple was granted a patent relating to under-screen Touch ID that combines shortwave infrared technology with an optical imaging system that could have multiple functions. Not only does the latest embodiment aim to read the user's fingerprint when it touches the display, it could also determine vein pattern, blood oxygenation, pulse, and the presence of gloves and wetness.

Despite this, recent predictions as to when under-screen Touch ID might be introduced, if at all, have been pushed back. In a September 2021 research note, Kuo had predicted that Apple would launch at least one new iPhone model with an under-screen fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023. But seven months later, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any iPhone models with under-screen Touch ID in 2023 or 2024.

Apple did test an under-screen fingerprint scanner for at least some iPhone 13 models, according to trusted reports, but Apple apparently decided not to move forward with the idea.

In the latest development, according to news aggregator account "yeux1122" on the Korean Naver blog, industry sources now believe that Apple will debut under-screen Touch ID in the two to three years following the debut of under-panel Face ID.

Judging by the pace of development of under-panel technology as outlined in industry consultant Ross Young's roadmap, this suggests we could see a new under-screen version of Touch ID in a 2026 iPhone at the earliest, possibly in the same year that Apple is expected to move both Face ID and the front-facing camera under the display.

Of course, we cannot be certain that Apple will ever put Touch ID under iPhone screens. There also remains a possibility that Apple instead introduces an iPhone with Touch ID built into the power button, in line with the latest iPad Air and iPad mini models, but there haven't been any rumors to suggest that Apple plans to go down that avenue.

I know it wasn’t advertised as far as I know, but I noticed such a huge jump in Face ID’s speed coming from the 13 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max that I honestly don’t even care if they bring Touch ID back or not and I never thought I would be saying that.

It’s literally so fast now I don’t even remember it’s there. It would be great if they added a “Bypass Lock Screen” option in the settings somewhere to make it feel even faster.

I am SO sick of reading MacRumors articles which talk about possible features coming not year but next year, in 2026, the late 2020s, etc...

I miss feeling excited for what is coming THIS year with hardware. And I miss Apple genuinely delighting us with their first-party app updates and significant, decent, relatively bug-free updates to their OSes.

It feels like we're just drip fed incremental updates with a promise/vague hope of more in future years, all while paying more and more for the privilege.

Apple, do better. I've used your products all my life and likely always will but I long for a return to some of the values of the Apple of old.

The further away from Touch Id I get the less I care for it's re-implementation.

However, I do see it being useful. For security purposes having both Face ID and Touch ID to verify purchases would be nice. I've turned off Face ID to verify purchases because it immediately validates instead of letting me read the price first. Having to do both would be nice before a purchase goes through.

I'd prefer the both of those to using my password.

Agreed! For Maximum security, I think a combo of Touch ID + Face ID would be ideal. Sometimes the Face ID is too fast and you don't realize what happened.

I think Apple likes to have backup plans, that’s why we keep hearing about both under display TouchID and under display FaceID..

Under display TouchID would also be handy for cheap devices (iPhone SE, basic iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Air) and for possible novel form factors that are a bad fit for FaceID..

Lol. Coming in 2030. Apple knows no one is going to outsell them worldwide (in the flagship category) so they have no need to bring features like this to the iPhone.

What advantages does Touch ID have over Face ID, other than when you go on a spy mission and wear a fake beard?

Honest question, as I sometimes wear glasses, head gear at times, sometimes doesn't shave for a couple of weeks, and yet have Face ID working essentially always. It is just so much more convenient and faster to use compared to Touch ID in my experience.

I kind of like the peep into a possible future. MR should just not present them as coming developments.

Can't they put it on the side of one of the buttons? But I guess they want to get rid of all buttons.

Apple have been pretty good with accessibility - I hope they find a way to make Touch ID accessible to visually impaired folks and anyone else with other sensory issues. Right now the physical Touch ID is great as you can always find it with your hands. If it's just a glass front with no buttons it'll make things a very awkward.

You know when in movies they have to cut off somebody’s finger to gain access to a door that has fingerprint scanner, how does that work if the door is controlled by Face ID?
