For my XS, in September it ran out of AC+, but last Thursday, I started the month to month for AC+ $9.99. I figure the battery might need replacement sometime in year 3. Given the grace period between running out of AC+ and renewing it. I suspect you do not need to hassle Apple. There is a grace period before you are completely out of coverage. The GB staff have some leeway when it comes to repairs. So I suspect, just be nice about it, and they will take care of you.
