I have never bought applecare for a macbook, but was wondering if it would be worth it for the new retina MBP

If you don't need the phone support after 90 days, you can wait until closer to the year mark and see how you feel. Is the new design any more likely to develop problems after one year then previous models? No way to know.

It supports your MBPs defects.
But none accidental.
If you drop them, get water damaged, or you messed it up while opening up your MBP, your warranty is voided.

I would rethink about getting the rMBP 13 first of all.
