I just got my first macbook, is the AppleCare plan in Canada the same as US where I just have to get it within 1 year of the purchase date? Also, if there's something wrong with the macbook, will the apple store in Canada provide service in store too?

correct. The apple care is actually world wide. So you can get it serviced in store in canada, U.S. and whatever country that has an apple store. :D

so maybe buy it in teh states and use it in Canada if need be

Yes you could do that if you wanted to. However Applecare is not valid worldwide per se. There are a few countries like Dubai, Israel and several others where applecare is not valid.
