I have an iMac 27" which I've had covered with Applecare+ for several years. It has started to develop some burn in around the edges, especially with white pages/applications. I'll try to speak with Applecare this weekend - of course no one here can predict whey will say. Its old enough that I'd prefer to get some kind of a credit towards a new machine rather than the hassle of a repair, but has anyone had experience with this and what was the resolution?

Depends on the severity but good chance that, yes, it'll be covered. For repair, not for "Credit."

Once it's fixed, you can trade it (or sell it) toward buying a new computer.

What did AppleCare say about the burn in?

I had a display replaced on a 2012 MacBook Pro with image retention issues.

First they asked me to do the most basic troubleshooting imaginable - reboot, create a new user, wipe and fresh install. Its very clearly not a software issue but they asked despite me sending a physical picture of the symptoms. Not holding that against the reps since that's what Apple Support is these days. Then they offered on-site replacement or I can bring into a store and they'll send out for repair. I need to re-organize and backup this machine so I'll try to get it to a store in the next couple of weeks.

What model year is the iMac? Certain years (like 2014) are notorious for burn in, and just collecting info on which years have been reported to have this problem

@wilberforce "...just collecting info on which years have been reported to have this problem."

FYI, I've just seen a (well used) 2017 iMac Pro screen with the 'pink edges' problem that 2015 5K iMacs suffer from. ☹️
