Applecare MA515LL/A vs MB588LL/A

Hi All,
I have a new Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Penryn that I purchased in Feb 08. What's the difference in Applecare MA515LL/A vs MB588LL/A ? There is a price difference between Apple and one of our vendors. I can get MA515LL/A for 269.00 vs the Apple Store MB588LL/A for 349.00. I just want to make sure I get the right coverage.

I can't give you a definite answer, sorry. But I do remember this coming up before. From what I remember the cheaper version of applecare you can get is for the old powerbook before the MBP came out. The verdict on the thread I read basically said the cheaper applecare would work, the one for the powerbook...

Your best bet would to just call or stop by an apple store and ask them...

Again, sorry I couldn't give you a yes or no just thought I'd give you some insight since no one else has.

I actually called AppleCare about this today. Any AppleCare enrollment number for PowerBook or MacBook Pro will work for the MacBook Pro. The oldest boxes only say PowerBook. Slightly newer ones will say PowerBook/MacBook Pro, and the newest ones will say MacBook Pro. Any of them will work as long as the enrollment number hasn't been used yet.

Same story for the MacBook and MacBook Air. The oldest boxes will say iBook, the newer ones will say iBook/MacBook, and the newest ones say MacBook/MacBook Air. Even the iBook enrollment numbers will work for the MacBook Air.

Doesnt matter, they will still activate your MBP if they havent been used.

Applecare MA515LL/A vs MB588LL/A

I just checked with AppleCare and they will honor "AppleCare Protection Plan for PowerBook 3.0 M8853LL/A - 3 Year Plan" for use with my 10 month old MacBook Pro.
The M8853LL/A is available from Amazon for $173 plus shipping.
I will, of course, take the unopened box to the local Apple Store just to make sure!

If you buy from the seller's own website instead of Amazon's, then you can get it for $173 with free shipping. If you buy it from them through Amazon, you have to pay for shipping.

Also, their store is listed on Microsoft's Live Cashback site at 7%, so you're actually getting it for about $161.

Update: Oops. It looks like they removed it from their site. Probably too many orders.

really peeved at the moment that amazon is not allowing applecare sales to Florida residents...

That's the unfortunate result of some really annoying laws that were enacted in Florida. It's only been in the last few years that the Apple Specialist I work for has been able to sell them, and it's still not allowed for some types of sales (I think online sales fall into that category, although Apple's online store still sells it, of course, so there is a way around that).

wondering the same thing. just bought the MA515LL/A on ebay, and i didnt realize it was an older model of apple care, i hope it works for mine, if not ill be out 100 bucks...
