Just called in for a *box* for a mail in Applecare.

I found this ~wording~ interesting in the email that was sent

Please note that if you decline service because the repair is not covered by Apple or no issue is found with the product, a diagnostic fee of no more than $100 USD may be charged.

It's on every work authorization form you sign when you take the computer into the Apple Store as well, but I've never seen them charge anyone.

The key term is "may." This is just to cover their backs.
