Hi,
I recently bought a MacBook Pro through an authorised reseller (Planet Audio Systems/AppleWorld), including an AppleCare protection plan.
That was 2 weeks ago. I've been considering talking to Apple about the heat of my laptop. The whine I can live with, but the heat is worrying. I'm concerned about the effect it'll have on the system's lifespan.
Anyway, I discovered via the Apple website that the plan had to be enrolled, and that I should have an enrolment number.
Of course, I didn't have one. So I phoned Apple.
They said "it should be on the box". Box? There was no box! All I got was a jiffy bag containing the AppleCare User Guide. There was no card, and the guide contained no stickers or codes.
Apple told me to contact my reseller, which I've just done.
Here's the funny part...
My reseller told me I'm not the first to mention this. Their support told me that Apple used to send them a boxed AppleCare pack. But recently they've been receiving just these jiffy bags. They're going to chase this up with Apple and let me know how it goes.
The bag is clearly supplied by Apple since there's the usual "By opening this package you agree to blah blah blah" sticker, and an Apple part code and barcode sticker. I've already confirmed that none of these codes are an enrolment code.
Anyone else experienced this in the UK or elsewhere?
Also, regarding the heat: I'm not being a whiner (pardon the pun). It's at the point where I have to be careful how I pick it up when I move it. It's literally hotter than a fresh cup of coffee. I've almost dropped it a couple of times because I've touched the wrong part when picking it up. It's so hot that my instinctive reaction is just to let go!
The really worrying thing is that even when the fans come on, the air leaving the vent at the back is barely warm. Something's amiss if the heat inside simply is not being shifted by the fans for whatever reason. I've read with interest the stories about the apparent misapplication of the thermal grease. This would seem to be the cause, although I'd like to hear that from an Apple technician.
Regarding the whine... it's not really bothering me too much. However, it does seem to be getting louder. Whether the repeated heating and cooling is contributing to this, I'm not sure.
Finally, there's the slightly wonky eject key. Its left edge is significantly higher than the rest of the keyboard. Cosmetically, I'm not bothered. But I worry about it rubbing the screen when the lid's closed. Remember the problems with the keys marking the screens a while back on the PowerBooks?
I have a W8612xxxxx, 12th-week model. It seems that even the latest production runs still have issues, so I'm not gunning for an immediate replacement. But I am interested in getting my concerns logged against my AppleCare history should anything worsen, or should there be a later revision without these issues. I suppose I'm walking a fine line, though. It's probably easier to ask for a new replacement for a 2-week old machine than it is for a 6-month old.
All that aside, I think the MBP's a fantastic machine. I just want to make sure it doesn't hurt itself either via excessive heat or the eject key damaging the screen!
