If I purchased a Macbook pro through Apple's refurb store, can I add the AppleCare warranty in the first year or is that only for new macs? Thanks

It applies to both refurbs and new machines they are treated identically.

Yes. You can also get Apple Care if you purchased an open box item from Best Buy too.

You can put Apple Care on anything that still has the original 1 yr Apple warranty, no matter where you get it.
