Applecare purchase

I know this is a basic question but I bought a Powerbook nearly 12 months ago and want to add Applecare to it. The Apple website is unclear how this works.

Do I have to buy the package and then register the serial number somehow.

I know I have to do it within the year so when is that measured? (my initial purchase date is 19.4.04)

Given you are so close to you purchase anniversary, I would recommend you call them up to order/discuss/activate?.
