Applecare purchased after 90 days?

I know I can contact to purchase AppleCare for my MBP15 within the warranty period, but I am wondering what these are?

I have always bought AppleCare through schools, but back then, they came in packages and you could just enter in provided codes to validate. I am wondering if this is what that is.
