Can you purchase Applecare after the 1 year warranty? I have a mid 2009 uMB in perfect condition, but I am considering giving it to my son, and I just want to have the added insurance for him.

If not I will have to purchase a new one for him, as I only use my uMB for minor stuff and I am very careful with it.

You have until the 1 year anniversary of the machine, you can't purchase AppleCare after that. But if it's barely over 1 year old and you really want AppleCare, I would book an appointment at an Apple store, show them the machine and and ask to buy the AppleCare from them directly. If it's really in good condition, they might be satisfied to sell you the extended warranty anyway. Worth a try.
