I was thinking of covering some of the box or case that the apple watch sport came in into a home made charging cradle (or whatever) for my bedroom.

However, I'm not sure if my applecare would be voided if I cut up some of the case/box that the apple watch came in.

Can anyone shed some light if I need to box/case intact if I need to take my watch to the  store for service?

I've never brought the packaging with me for service on any Apple product in the past. The AppleCare is tied to the WATCH, it's serial number, so you can throw everything else away and still get service.
