When I got my new iPhone 7 last week, I was able to get the annual upgrade program at Verizon where if you have the phone for 30 days and pay half off (or within a year) you are eligible for an upgrade to the new model. Seeing as how I can get a new phone every year, does it make any sense at all to purchase Applecare?

AppleCare is more than just an extra year of warranty. It offers accidental protection. If you break your phone you won't be able to trade it in for the new one.

I'm not sure if there is a relationship between owning a phone for less a year vs accidental event. What would you do if you break the phone within the first year?

I do have insurance with Verizon for $9 or $10 / mo. That would resolve any concern for breakage, so guess it is cheaper year to year to do that vs AppleCare since I'd be wasting a year of AC.

You can cancel Apple Care and get a prorated refund.
Get Apple Care pay for two years cancel after a year use the refund toward the next phone. I did this going from 4S( that I bought when the 5 came out) to a 5S and 5S to 6 Plus.
I kept the 6Plus going to 7Plus so I let it slide.
