I got 3gs as a gift but this is a replacement unit rather than a new purchase.

I also got a receipt that states that warranty is effective through October 2010.

Is that possible to buy applecare for such replacements? and if yes will it be valid till October 2011?

If any of you guys had any experience with that, your replies will be hugely appreciated.

thanks in advance

I believe you can buy AC for any device still under warranty but not 100% sure. I would go ahead and get it.... return that phone first because you will have an issue that is covered like dust under the screen. Start fresh AC with "new" 3gs.

Replacement iPhones have 90 day warranty or until the end of the original 1 year warranty whichever is later, so if the original iPhone's warranty expired on July 2010 you had until July 2010 to purchase Applecare. I don't believe it can be done during the 90 day extension if the original warranty has already expired.

However, if the original warranty is good through October 2010 you have until that time to purchase Applecare and it'll be valid through October 2011.

Makes no sense. If the receipt the OP got came with the replacement iPhone and it says the warranty is good through October 2010, it's already a "new" 3GS that's about a month old. If, however, it's the original iPhone receipt then yes the replacement phone might be older than that. No reason to return it if it's not defective in the first place.

so i went ahead and ordered applecare. and the date until which it is valid is mid june 2011. so it looks as if it gave me the 2 years of support from the original purchase date of mid june 2009. the receipt that i have from the original buyer says that the phone was replaced some time in July 2010 and so it had 3 months of complimentary support from apple. this was in the uk.

in russia however, when my iphone was replaced by the provider due to some screen issues, applecare was given for 2 years from the date of the replacement.
