Apple is not running the same promotion this year as they dont think we deserve any freebees.

Apple's not offering it this year, as far as I know. I am not surprised, with people complaining about getting "crap" apps and proceeding to leave bad reviews online. Seems the potential fallout is worse than any publicity gained this way.

Its because there are not 12 U2 albums available to give away for free. .

It is only good if they give away apps that are paid and popular, so better not to bother if they are not going to splash out.

Exactly. People were so ungrateful last year that i'm glad Apple has not done it this year.
