It baffles me that an iPhone costs as much as a MacBook Pro.

Does Apple make a much greater margin selling iPhone?
What is so hard to understand? An iPhone Pro has a camera system approaching equivalent to thousand dollar standalone cameras; Mac laptops have no such camera system. iPhone pros cram a huge amount of tech competence into a very small device, and engineering and building all that miniaturization I am sure is expensive.

These deals seemed a lot more enticing back when the base MBP came with a Pro chip. Now it feels like $1299 for a MacBook Air… especially since MBA comes with 16GB RAM now. I realize the Pro has a lot of other little upgrades over the Air, but it seems the price gap is too significant for about the same performance when it’s still $300 more after the hundreds in savings.

Definitely happy I bought my M1 MBP back when them on sale for $1299.

And don’t forget the required cellular radios and antennas, GPS, FaceID, and wireless charging.

It is apples and oranges.

It is difficult these days to tease apart exact margins for the different products. It is easy to determine, quarter over quarter, what the margin for all iPhones of all types must have been via information that is certified to be true under severe legal penalty. Same for all Macs, plus things like monitors which mostly seem to be included in the Mac number. But Apple (and most modern electronics manufacturers) don’t want to allow much greater insight than this, in theory to allow them to adjust as necessary without market penalty. From this information, yes, the margin for iPhones is (still) greater than the margin for Macs. But that is not a super satisfying answer. And don’t forget the general category if services . . . the services revenue predicted for each sku can dramatically change how one looks at profitability and margin.

Is the M4 a compelling upgrade from M1? I've got a 2020 M1 MBP with 8GB RAM, and I could really use some more RAM—XCode runs poorly on the current laptop. On the other hand, I don't use XCode all that much on the laptop (I have a work computer for that). I love my Touch Bar and don't want to give that up until I have to. Would I be overawed by the M4 and grateful that I gave up my beloved Touch Bar, or would I not notice enough improvement over the M1 to justify the price?

M4 is almost 2x as fast as M1. But CPU is not the whole story. For xcode 16.x and up even 16GB of RAM is not enough. 8GB is only good for very small projects and you have to accept swapping. Having AI to predict what you want to type eats memory. Reasonable minimum is 24GB, optimal 32GB. If you ever want to use some local models to help you with coding, 64GB is minimum. Now you have to buy M4 Max. And that is already 5000$ line crossed for 16' macbook pro. For many this is too much.

Most interesting upgrade from M1 to M4 are CPU counters. If you care about performance this is great feature.

Who buys 512GB SSD ??
I won't. I have way too much in terms of music and art libraries that need to go somewhere. It's getting so that 8TB isn't enough.
I really hope these discounts are to clear the way for new incoming MacBooks in September…. THIS YEAR. Not early 2026 :-/
I doubt they would only have $300 discounts on MBPs for 3 weeks and then announce the next iteration.

For apple to not sabotage its own effort to sell existing stock, I think it's gotta be an announcement in October with release happening in 2026.

Who buys 512GB SSD ??
I do, but it depends on your use case. I have a lot of data, but most of the time I don’t need to access large chunks quickly, so I have 1TB SD card that fits flush and never leaves the slot. For me I paid a 512GB MacBook Pro, but I have a 1.5TB drive in practice.
