Apple has released "F1: The Movie" for digital purchase and rental through the TV app, marking the start of the film's premium video-on-demand window while it continues to perform strongly in theaters.

The film premiered worldwide on June 27 and has now surpassed $600 million at the global box office. This makes F1 Apple's most financially successful movie to date, with the release also returning to IMAX theaters due to its popularity.

Apple has now made the film available to rent for $20 or to purchase for $25 in the Store section of the TV app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. It includes approximately 45 minutes of bonus features through iTunes Extras.

The same pricing and availability apply through other services such as Amazon Prime Video. It is not yet available to stream on Apple TV+.

This period is known in the film industry as the premium video-on-demand (PVOD) window, and represents a higher-priced digital release that precedes availability through subscription streaming. The pricing is in line with other major studio releases in recent years.

Apple is expected to lower the cost once the film transitions from PVOD to standard digital distribution, when it will be available to rent or buy at the usual lower tier. This will likely coincide with its debut on Apple TV+, where it will be available to stream at no additional charge to subscribers.

Based on the previous Apple theatrical-first films such as "Killers of the Flower Moon" and "Napoleon," the PVOD window typically lasts one to two months, suggesting that F1 will likely come to Apple TV+ in October or November 2025.

If I buy it, is there a downloadable file to keep? I’ve tried to find some info on this but can’t. I want to know if I can keep it on a drive locally and burn it to disc preferably.

Just watched it the other day, never had a chance to catch it in theaters even though I loved racing movies. This movie in HDR10+ and 4k was amazing, I also loved how it showcased the more technical aspects from engineering a car to go 1/10th of a second faster can add up to a win to gaming the regulations of F1. I still think Rush is the best racing movie I've ever watched, however this movie was still great and one of the better movies to come out this year.

You're probably better off waiting for the blu-ray release. I wouldn't trust that any downloadable file would be playable at some point in the future unless it was unencrypted (hint: it won't be).

I usually buy blu-rays and rip them for my 'keeper' movies, although I haven't been successful with the 4K blu-rays yet (plus the ridiculous file sizes).

I saw F1 in IMAX a liked it more than I expected to, the first time I can say that for an Apple movie or TV show. Apple’s content typically has the feeling of a slickly produced HR training seminar, teaching us to be nice to each other and embrace diversity, led by a past-their-prime big name celebrity. While there were elements of that in F1, Kosinski’s direction of the action scenes and Pitt’s performance set this apart and made it an enjoyable watch.

Seems to be the trend for “blockbuster” movies nowadays, $30 to buy and $20 to rent, way too expensive for me, for all of those. this one, F1, I’ll happily wait until it’s free on ATV+…
Really? Here in my country the price of a cinema session is between 8 and 10€… and movie rentals (in BluRay) should be lower than that. I haven’t been in one of this stores in a long time, to be fair.

Charging $20 for a one time viewing is, at least for me, excessive.

Wait, what show do they have that feels like that? Have you watched Ted Lasso and literally no other shows?

All the new releases, when they first are available via streaming, have been showing at the prices I mentioned. That usually last for like 2 months or so and then they get "regular" pricing, eg selling for $20 or renting for I think $6 or $7...
I typically wait til they're on sale for $10...

Sadly isn't the IMAX® expanded aspect ratio version.. it's the lame 2.39 widescreen version

Hopefully the 4K Blu-ray will be the IMAX® version

Has anyone that purchased this been able to download it in .m4v so it can be synced with iOS devices? I've tried multiple computers, and multiple settings and I cannot get it out of HLS/moviepackage format. I even confirmed downloading another movie that went to .m4v. Really hope that this isn't a sign that .m4v is going to be completely abandoned.

I am a big big fan of Rush.
I watched Grand Prix a few weeks ago. A bit slow at times, but if you absorb it all, it is extremely rewarding.

Even if you like the movie, you should never forget that Tim Cook wanted you to see it so bad (for his service revenue) that he sent advertisements via Wallet push notifications.
