Apple's iPhone 11 was the most in-demand smartphone during the first quarter of 2020, even as the world weathered a global pandemic, according to new research shared today by research firm Omdia.

Apple shipped an estimated 19.5 million iPhone 11 models during the quarter, thanks to the more affordable price tag of the device along with its robust feature set.
"For more than five years--even amid shifting conditions in the wireless market and the global economy--one thing has remained consistent in the smartphone business: Apple has taken either the first or second rank in Omdia's global model shipment ranking," said Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research at Omdia. "Apple's success is the result of its strategy to offer relatively few models. This has allowed the company to focus its efforts on a small number of products that appeal to a broad selection of consumers and sell in extremely high volumes."
Samsung's Galaxy A51 was the second most popular smartphone with 6.8 million units shipped, followed by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro, with 6.6 and 6.1 million units shipped, respectively.

Apple's iPhone XR, which was the best-selling smartphone in the year-ago quarter, took the fourth spot with 4.7 million units shipped. The iPhone XR was more popular than the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, though it's worth noting that those two smartphones were counted individually rather than together.

Apple shipped an estimated 4.2 million iPhone 11 Pro Max models and an estimated 3.8 million iPhone 11 Pro models, for a combined total of 8 million smartphones shipped. Had those been counted as a combined total, the two models would have placed second in the shipment rankings.

Omdia is a research firm that was established following the merger of the research division of Informa Tech and the IHS Markit technology research portfolio.

Not surprising at all, ton of value in the 11 or even the SE. I am going to take a hard look at the base 12 when it is released, but ProMotion may win me over. Apple needs to just keep growing their base to remain dominant, I don't see Android making any inroads soon.

Both of the above can be more import than (estimated) units sold.

That and although sales and $ value are interesting, Apple market share in relation to IOS devices is reducing over the years, Androids is growing. It's a small but consistent trend. But then Tim knows this, hence iPhone SE at a more budget price point.

It's 2020.. People still own Androids???

would be a Very boring tech world if every computer and phone out there was an Apple device, don’t you think? Something quite Orwellian about it.

if anything these numbers are impressive for a single device. Also note the massive YoY increase vs the XR, that 50$ drop paid off

Iphone 11 may be the most popular phone q1/2020, but then there is:
1. market share...android
2. satisfaction..Galaxy note 9

Both of the above can be more important than (estimated) units sold, which feeds into revenue.

I'd imagine whatever does more for the bottom line is the most important. Market share does nothing bud feed their advertising business and Samsung hasn't had a major hit phone in years. It seems that more and more people keep coming back to Apple as their base keeps growing.

Well, to be fair if you are looking at it from an OS point of view then Android wins it with an overall market share of something like 85% of all smartphones.

But we’re NOT looking at it from an OS point of view. This article is referring to an individual model of smartphone that is more popular than other individual models of other smartphones, never mind the OS said models run. So don't get your Android panties in a knot, okay.

"Android" is not a OEM nor a specific smartphone. You are comparing apples to whole fruit markets.

The Galaxy Note 9 is a niche device not comparable to the bast selling phone in the world, and by the way, take a deep look at the very satisfaction chart you are referring to.

What’s Orwellian is the fact that 90% of smartphones run Android and 90% of PCs run Windows. That right there makes it a very boring tech world. Android and Windows fans (apparently the majority here on MacRumors) call Apple users cultists and lemmings. The real cultists and lemmings are the ones who use whatever everybody else is using. A hive mentality if you think about it, where the individual is subsumed into the collective. So Apple is really the only silver lining in an otherwise drab and boring tech world after all.
