Apple's new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets are dominating the Japanese market in their first week of sales, reports Forbes, which cited weekly sales rankings provided by Japan's BCN. iPhone sales were boosted by carrier Softbank, which edged out KDDI and NTT DoCoMo as the top wireless provider and accounted for 42.9 percent of weekly iPhone sales. According to the tracking, individual iPhone models took the top 18 spots in sales for the week.

The iPhone 6 was the most popular iPhone version, displacing competitors and the company's own the iPhone 5s and 5c handsets, which previously topped the list for the month of August. According to BCN, the relative split between iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models was roughly 82 percent to 18 percent, with the smaller iPhone 6 seeing much greater sales than the larger model.
BCN tracks smartphones on a weekly and monthly basis, and in its latest weekly rankings the iPhone 6 took 8 of the top 10 spots with the iPhone 5s taking 5th and 8th place. The iPhone 6 Plus' highest ranking was 11th and it has a fairly strong showing taking 5 of the next 7 spots.

Apple's success compares to the month of August where the iPhone 5s took the 3rd and 4th positions and the 5c captured the 6th, 7th and 10th positions.
A similar dominance of the iPhone 6 was observed in US metrics with the iPhone 6 far outpacing the bigger iPhone 6 Plus. Much of this disparity may be the result of supply constraints affecting the availability of iPhone 6 Plus handsets, making it much harder for customers to find the models in retail stores and online.

Apple began selling the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on September 19 and sold a record-breaking ten million handsets in the first weekend of sales. Demand for the handset remains high with minimum ship times of seven to ten days for most iPhone 6 models and three to four weeks for iPhone 6 Plus versions.

No, sorry. If I learned anything from MR it's that the Japanese will never buy a phone with a large screen because of their "tiny hands."

You beat me to it. iMO the "phablet" demographic is a synthetic set of statistics made up to make Samsung look good.

Went to check out the new phones here in Nagasaki at Yamada Denki Sat Sept 20. The sales-staff for Docomo said sales have been very slow and there was not even one person waiting outside the store, with plenty of stock still available.

Not much of a fuss here in the sticks of Japan.

I bought the 6 plus after anticipating it for months, begging for it to be real and not just a rumor, than after 3 days I returned it for the regular 6. The 6 plus it's just too darn big. What was Apple thinking? For comparison even the 6 is basically the same size as the 5.2inch LG g2. If it wasn't for the ecosystem and superior apps, Apple would have hard time competing.

Thats a matter of opinion and personal taste.

I have the 6 Plus and I love it. For me, its better option than a smaller phone and an iPad. I love the landscape mode and tend to use that most of all.

Big fuss in Tokyo on the Friday, but I was able to walk into a store on Monday and buy a 6+ immediately with no line up. Docomo had all colors, all sizes of both 6 and 6+ available for immediate sale. having said that I've seen plenty of 6es in people's hands, but no other 6+

I bought the 6+ knowing it was too big, but also knowing that you get used to new things very quickly. If you sit there focussing on the size, it will take a long time to get used to it. If you accept it's bigger than you are used to, and you will need to take care for a week or 2 until you adapt, then you won't notice it as much. I think you would have been ok after a little while. But if the 6 suits you better, then returning was a good move.

Some people like the bigger size, but most don't. But iphone is so dominant over here, it's hard to know what size people really prefer. It will be interesting to see adoption of 6+

Hmm. I don't think Apple is run by gullible people who made larger phones because of fake statistics, or that their record sales reports are fake.

I do think that Apple will sell a somewhat lower mix percentage of phablets than most Android makers do, though... simply because iPhone owners have not had years of larger devices to get used to.

Not true. The 5.2" G2 is quite thick, making it almost exactly the same size (volume) as the 5.5" 6 Plus, and 37% larger than the 6. (Weight and width of the G2 are in between the two iPhones, as is its screen size.)

As for length--yes, there are many Android phones a fraction of an inch shorter than an iPhone, by being so thick. But while thickness matters for pocketabilty (especially if you then add a case), length matters... for what? Only if your pocket is exactly the same length as a certain Android phone and you don't care about having room to spare--a rare use case in which the iPhone would stick out a bit. All my pockets are WAY deeper than a 6 Plus.

And the final size factor: camera hump. iPhone's lens ring now sticks out a tiny bit, but that's nothing like the huge humps so many Android users have to tolerate.

When Apple did not have big phones:
No big phones? What is wrong with Apple?!?!

When Apple does have big phones:
If it wasn't for the ecosystem and superior apps, Apple would have hard time competing.

I guess there's no pleasing everyone.

Exactly. It's disappointing that Apple is trying to chase the Android market with the Plus. That market seems fickle; they buy based on specs, not user experience. And user experience dictates that the Plus should not exist, both on usability and uh...bendability. But here it is, and here we are.

We know that all asians and asian countries are the same, just like latin american people and countries.

So the 6's out selling any other iphones and setting records is made up also?

They were thinking that almost 20% of people would opt for the Plus and make more money off of a slightly different product. Apple is a BUSINESS.

I wonder what it means in terms of actual sales... How many phones were sold and therefore how many iPhones...

My hands are comically small, and I have a 6 Plus and love it. Heck, as a person with really small hands, I already used my iPhone 5s with two hands most of the time, so it doesn't really change all that much.
