Apple chief designer Jony Ive is scheduled to give a talk on the "future of design" at the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, DC, next week.

Beginning at 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, November 29, the one-hour speaking engagement has been arranged in collaboration with Smithsonian Magazine, with free places being offered on a first-come, first served basis.
[Ive] has been described as one of the most powerful people in the world's most valuable company and is a 2017 honoree of the Smithsonian's American Ingenuity Awards (the "Golden Globes of intellect"), which honor revolutionary breakthroughs in the arts and sciences, education and social progress. Ive will be joined in conversation by Rick Tetzeli, Editor At Large of Fast Company and author of the bestselling biography Becoming Steve Jobs: The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader.
All advance tickets for the program have been claimed, but anyone interested in attending can join the waitlist online or walk up on the day for a chance to get a seat. Any open seats may be released to walk-up visitors 10 minutes before the program.

Ive's last public talk was at October's TechFest 2017, an event held in New York City. Earlier this month, Ive also sat down for an interview with design, architecture, and fashion magazine Wallpaper* to discuss the Apple Park campus, which he had a hand in designing, as well as the iPhone X. Most recently, TIME interviewed Ive about the smartphone, after the device appeared in its 25 Best Inventions of the Year list.

Exactly, you won't find him at a Pro users industry convention, but you will find him in a museum because he designs for his own glory and asks himself "what do I want in a museum in 20 to 30 years" NOT "what would help pro users do their job better than the next user on a competing platform"

This comment belongs in a museum. Pretty much identical grumblings since MR opened its gates.

I'll do his speech right now: "Remove all buttons and affordances for humans. Make design as plain as possible, remove all notion of customization. When in doubt, remove everything. The greatest design in the history of time is a plain white sheet of paper." The end.

(Can you tell I'm not a fan?)

Sounds like you are quoting Steve Jobs. Guess you are not a fan? Are you that guy standing outside Infinity Loop with the placard reading “Spindler is Apple’s Saviour”?

Ironically the AW has one button too many. Agree some Ive designs are a bit much and impractical. Some of that criticism has to be passed on to the other Apple execs and managers involved in h/w AND s/w design. Ive was at his best when Jobs pushed him to keep refining. Unfortunate TC doesn’t know the difference between an Easter egg and a Faberge. That is really the difference here.

 I’m not trying to cause trouble here or be a smart aleck, but is that a legit photo of him, or did you accidentally post a ‘shopped photo? (because unless I’m seeing things, there appears to be a notch cut into his hairline)

I can understand people’s frustrations with him, but he is quite a famous designer and we had to have liked at least some of his designs, otherwise why else would most of us be here with so much Apple stuff? He also IS interesting to listen to, (for laughs for some of you salty people), and likely is going to be a big draw. I would go see him at this event if I weren’t driving a school carpool and doing a bazillion other “mom things” and holiday stuff on top of all the usual.

Jony Ive on the future of design: Ok, let me guess... A single slab of glass as thin as can be.

His design mantra for many years is to get the technology out of the way so that only the software shows through. What do people expect him to say at this presentation?

I don’t think MR has always been full of “grumblings” - I think it has become bad the last 5 years after SJ during which Apple started neglecting the Mac with record gaps in product refreshes.

Lol just read the comments from when the iPod was launched. Or anything non-computer for that matter.

Makes sense . Apple is great at creating an OS with excellent value but the hardware - not so much. I’d love to legitimately have MacOS on a Dell XPS or iOS on a different phone.

Whoever edited that photo of him sucks donkey you-know-what. What's up with the color/light/contrast? It's so dark and looks terrible.

The sooner this (bleep) retires, the better off we'll ALL be. PLEASE, before he designs the next MacBook to be .01mm thin with ZERO ports.

Future of design: circles, white, no shadows, no light, no sounds, no texture, metal, glass, round, bump, notch and more notch.
