Apple's previous generation 24-inch M1 iMacs have received steep discounts this week on Amazon, including up to $651 off select models. These deals are being offered by Expercom via their Amazon storefront.

Starting with the 8-Core GPU/256GB M1 iMac, Amazon has this model for $898.98 in Blue, which is down from the original price of $1,499.00. This is a new all-time low price on the M1 iMac.

Amazon also has the 8-Core GPU/512GB M1 iMac on sale for $1,048.97, down from $1,699.00. This is another new record low price, and it's available in Blue, Pink, and Green.

Apple's M1 iMac is about three years old at this point, and it was replaced with the 24-inch M3 iMac late last year. Despite its age, this is still an Apple silicon-based machine with plenty of internal power to support your average day-to-day usage and some more basic workflows.

Personally, if I was in the market and looking at this, I'd rather get an Apple Refurb 2023 iMac with M3 chip (8-core CPU, 8-core GPU), 8GB memory, 256GB storage for $200 more vs this 2021 iMac with M1 chip (8-core CPU, 8-core GPU), 8GB memory, 256GB storage at $898.98.

you get the m3 chip for $200 more but you also get 2 fewer ports, no Touch ID and no ethernet. granted if you have some discounted apple gift cards stockpiled...it's roughly the same price.

I wish I had a use for one of these.

Part of me wishes Apple had kept up with "Front Row" software so that I could use one of these in the kitchen instead of a TV.
you still can. AppleTv+ Mac app. Photo app. Music app. ...Runs iOS apps. In most ways probably is better suited today. Go look at pics of the old "Front Row" UI. Looks pretty ancient now from what I skimmed.

Does it work with a remote?

airplay receiver?
AirPlay 2 is not a suitable substitute for direct connection.
  • The available resolutions are 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p/4K. iMac will upscale them to 4.5K, with varying sharpness.
  • MacBooks will switch from 16x10 (1.6:1) to 16x9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio.
  • HiDPI retina scaling is limited to 720p or 1080p.
  • Latency (about 50 ms.).
  • While it supports 60 frames per second, it is often choppy.

The top end model at $1,050 was a great deal for my business. Replacing a 2012 iMac w SSD upgrade that employees use to scan physical mail, clock in and out, and do basic task with on occasion. Sale + Apple Care included since I have the Total Tech plan for the business was a no-brainer. iMacs are just the perfect office desk computer. The Mac Mini is great, but the all-in-one declutters the work space.

This is an increasingly old-fashioned sounding opinion, but there is no suitable substitute for a direct connection. Wired is always going to (have the potential to be) better in every way except the wire.

Better to use the improved Screen Sharing or VNC from another device if you want to run headless.

Still a damn fine all-in-one. Plenty fast for my needs, high-quality accessories in the box.. no complaints. I’ve had mine for a couple years and have no plans on replacing it anytime soon.

It’s the Apple silicon that does the trick, but the hardware is ace.

If only iMac can be used headless. $900 for 24-inch 4.5K screen + keyboard + mouse would make a very nice deal.

I found this. He was able to connect a MBA to a 24” iMac via Thunderbolt 3 cable.

He goes on to say others have been able to do this with 27” 5K iMacs as well (but I couldn’t find a video)

Wouldn’t say that isn’t suitable. Not as good but …

I don't need one of these, but I definitely would just to get the orange color.

... too bad they don't have the orange color available in this discount. :-/

M1 is still a great chip for most people. The big question for me is how long is Apple going to support the M1 chip? It's nearly 4 years old now. In a couple of years Apple may no longer support the newest macOS on the M1. And then a few years later all support will stop completely.

When you say headless you mean using only the internals without the screen? Because using the display only is possible with Luna display.

Good question. Think you might need a work around like 3rd party app.

Also maybe Siri works for that purpose.
If it's not fail-safe, one-button operation, then no go. My wife won't deal with apps etc. just to watch TV.

I loved the old 'Front Row' software from back in the day. It really made iMacs a viable tool for media. I used it all the time and lament its demise!
