The new M4 MacBook Air models that Apple announced today are a better deal than ever, with pricing that starts at $999. That's $100 less than the previous $1,099 starting price for the prior-generation M3 MacBook Air models.

Before today, Apple sold the M3 MacBook Air starting at $1,099, and the prior-generation M2 MacBook Air starting at $999, but both of those models have been discontinued and now Apple only has the M4 MacBook Air models available. Here are the base configurations and price points.

13-inch model:
  • $999 - 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
  • $1,199 - 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
  • $1,399 - 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
15-inch model:
  • $1,199 - 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
  • $1,399 - 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
  • $1,599 - 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
As noted in the pricing above, while $999 is the starting price for the 13-inch model, the next move up to the 13-inch model with a 10-core GPU is priced at $1,199, with no $1,099 model available for purchase. The 15-inch model continues to start at $1,199, the same as the M3 version, and there is no version with an 8-core GPU available.

The base MacBook Air models that Apple offers can be customized with upgraded memory and SSD storage, with up to 32GB of unified memory and 2TB of storage as options.

Pre-orders for the MacBook Air models are available starting today, with a launch to follow on March 12.

There is an error in this article, it says the 15-inch model starts at 1199, same as the M3 version. This is false, the M3 started at 1299, so that means the M4 version of the 15 inch has a price cut too.

Here is the M3 still on Best Buy, showing 1299:

...which is totally transparent in Canada because the CAD has weakened.
I checked again and it's now $50 cheaper. That's appreciated. I think the lineup itself is solid.

I could be wrong, but wasn’t the M3 15 inch priced at $1299?
Yes, it was

The 13-inch MacBook Air with M3 starts at $1,099 (U.S.) and $999 (U.S.) for education, and the 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 starts at $1,299 (U.S.) and $1,199 (U.S.) for education. Both are available in midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray.

It’s nice to finally get more RAM as standard but I wish they would include bigger hard drives. The 24GB RAM option should include a 1TB hard drive. Paying an extra $200 to go from 512 to 1TB is ridiculous.

24/512 is what I'm after in this new Air. On the other hand, $1599 gets me the base Pro, and I should be able to get by with 16GB of RAM. That makes the 24/512 Air and the 16/512 Pro the same price. Decisions, decisions.

A price cut… “from a certain point of view”. We’ve been Obi-Wan’d.

The Air was 999 for a long time and only increased to 1,099 to accommodate the lower spec model. So really, its priced back to where it should be!
Where it should be? Ever heard of a thing called inflation? :) The fact that it is priced 999 in 2025 is quite crazy. Apple sold the 11" MacBook Air back in 2014 for 899 and I thought that was really cheap. Simple inflation calculator tells me that 899 dollars in 2014 equals to about 1,206 in 2025.

Therefore, 1,099 or even 1,199 would be still fair even today. 999 is "dirt" cheap with all that considered.

I tried the pre-order with the 13.6 inch 10/10, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB of storage, similar to my M1 and it was only US$50 more than my refurbished M1 cost.

#humblebrag

I’m trading in my M1 MBP 16/512 for $445 credit!

They used my registered device to auto-enter the trade-in info, however, they mislabeled the machine as 1TB even though they have correct S/N, so I’m getting $100 more.

Just to check, I manually entered the info, answering questions like year, storage, and condition, and it calculated only $345 for my model.

Reminds me of getting the Community Chest card “Bank Error in Your Favor. Collect $100.”
