The first discount is on the 8-Core GPU, 256GB iMac at B&H Photo, priced at $1,199.00, down from $1,299.00. This sale is only available in the Silver color option, and will last through November 18.

Secondly, Amazon has the 10-Core GPU, 256GB M3 iMac for $1,299.00, down from $1,499.00. This one is also only available in Silver, and it's another new record low price for the brand new M3 24-inch iMac.

What do you mean? That it should be larger?
I think many of us are not happy with Apple's decision to only make a Tweener imac size and no true 27" replacement. I've been eyeing the $300 5K 27" Imacs on offerup and tempted to get one to convert it to a monitor for my mac mini. Can't find a 5K monitor for cheap with 500 nits.

They don't support Target Display Mode though so you can't use it as a monitor

Not worth the hassle. I finally bought a studio display on deep discount.

In the bigger scheme of things the iMac should have better base specs. With MacBooks when you start considering higher specs you find yourself considering the next model up such as a more powerful MacBook Pro over a BTO MacBook Air. But the current iMac doesn’t have that option—there is no more powerful AIO model anymore.

I think the iMac should have 512GB SSD as standard. You could have done what the new M3 MacBook Pro 14 does and start with 8/512. But ideally it should be 12/512 as base configuration.

And I’m not sure I would have gone with three tiers, but rather two tiers might make more sense.

- 8/512
- 16/1TB

…and then you can BTO from there. 256 is indeed manageable for a lot of people, but at the iMac’s price point it’s simply absurd to have such low storage as standard.

And I say this even as a fan of the iMac.

I would try this but no easy option to import it for my location.

Another option:

You gut out the Intel insides and replace it with a 3rd party board with DP/HDMI inputs. Presto 5K monitor. Some creative people have taken out their Mac Mini insides and place it inside the chassis also for a clean look.

This is where Apple's 8gb RAM for all M3 models unless you buy BTO really bites as you're basically dependent on Apple to give discounts which Tim Mcscrooge never gives.

24" iMac in 2023 is an insulting joke.

The vast majority of these machines are going to end up on office receptionists desks, retail design galleries, or home kitchens/dens, where they will be used with calendar apps or as Safari terminals. A bigger screen and more RAM simply isn't needed for those situations.

Are you sure it's been done on the 5K model's? Because the reason why Target Display Mode was removed was due to Apple using a proprietary two channel connection over Thunderbolt

Not seeing that price on amazon...

I'm wondering if MR posts fake discounts so that everyone clicks on their affiliate links. Since Amazon's affiliate program allows for 30-day cookies, if we end up buying anything on Amazon within that 30-day window, MR will get that commission.

Then MR can turn around and be like "*Update* Discount has expired.*"

Would not surprise me. I have also noticed they frequently cite prices as the "best ever" discounts when there have been steeper discounts available via non-affiliates. Hey @MacRumors care to comment?

I share your grievance about the lack of larger iMacs display options, including 27" and 32". Been waiting to replace my 2017 5K iMac and leu of a proper replacement will go the M3 Max MBP plus an external display route losing on display quality but gaining on performance. I am not in photo/video production so I should be fine. That being said, 24" all in one could still be a great value to many despite the monitor size and there is little to be offended about here as far as the screen size goes. What is more concerning is the lack of any attempt to improve the existing iMac as if it has reached its ultimate finite state and will not be improved any further, sunset, or abandoned.

Target display mode is irrelevant as you're going to remove all the circuitry. Simple google search will show how it's done. I'd get the links, but my job's firewall is very selective and MR is one of the few sites allowed, no shopping or github sites ;)

There's inherently nothing wrong with the 24 inch iMac for anyone coming from a 21.5 inch model or another similar all in one machine. By all accounts it's an upgrade in every way except the sad base RAM amount. I've been looking at one for my mom who is a very casual web browser and office apps user.

However as you pointed out, it's not a replacement for the 27 inch iMac, especially the higher end models. I have the same iMac as you and really want to upgrade as well, but see no compelling reason to. I have a 4.2 GHz i7, 40 GB of RAM and 5 TB of internal SSD. I can't get that on any iMac at any price point.

Also I hate cables & docking stations so any combination of Mac with a Studio Display is not for me.

Ah, so it requires a third party display board + a lot of additional work.. I'd rather just sell it and buy a 27" 5K Studio Display

An iMac is an one-cord solution for most problems for the vast majority of users. Video cam, speakers, mic... I hope that Apple has something up its sleeves for the future. I don't believe that Apple has decided to pull a plug on the whole affair. Rather, they might have reached (hopefully) a fact-based conclusion that 24" is the golden middle for most folks out there and will develop this design further. The lack of any engineering and design advancements on a 2 year old iMac is more worrisome but could be just a late addition to accommodate/utilize base M3s. I think that a bit more clarity regarding the future timeline of already established products would be of great help to all. I understand that the secrecy regarding some of new products requires the hush-hush approach but as for the rest it is counterproductive.

Fun fact: This is the first time since 2002 that Apple has not offered the iMac in multiple screen sizes.

Wouldn't be necessary if Apple had engineered it so it could be used as a secondary monitor in the first place. Would have reduced land fill and improved Apples green credentials. Of course it would also suppress Apples monitor sales, so thats not going to happen and screw the planet.
