Apple today shared its earnings results for the third fiscal quarter of 2020, and iPad and Mac sales saw a surge in growth as people transitioned from working in offices to working from home.

Both iPad and Mac saw double digit growth during the quarter. Mac sales brought in $7 billion, up from $5.8 billion in the year-ago quarter, while iPad sales brought in $6.5 billion, up from $5 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that these strong sales were achieved in spite of significant supply constraints that have limited the availability of certain iPads and Macs over the course of the last couple months.

Cook also said that Apple is working hard to get more iPads and Macs into the hands of customers, so sales could see continued growth in the fourth quarter as it appears many people will continue working from home for the foreseeable future.

Apple says that many of the customers who are purchasing iPads and Macs are new to those product lines. In China, for example, three out of four new customers who bought a Mac were new to Mac, and two out of three customers buying iPads were new customers.

Everyone is certainly up this quarter in the computer market. First big surge we've seen for it in years. The desktop and laptop markets have been flat or dying. Generally the commentary from MR fails to recognize that. "Mac desktop sales down 3%.", when the entire market is down 5%.

Nice to see the Mac doing well. Also it´s clear that margins for Mac are very healthy compared to iPad. iPad margins must be super thin as they sell twice as many iPads than Macs.

iPads generally retail for less than Macs. There's nothing to suggest the margins are thin.

I guess we would need to see the numbers, but AirPods and wearables have much lower retail pricing compared to iPads and still reach Mac revenue. It’s been said that AirPods have much higher margins than typical Apple products at around 59% sccording to Forbes.

Not too surprised by this, computers and tablets are more essential than ever. Good that they are still drawing new customers to the Mac.

Upgraded my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro. Very pleased with them being my older ones were mid 2011 and mid 2014.

I'd buy a new MBP myself if my 2015 wasn't as awesome as it is. I can't image giving it up at this time. But the day will come!

I don't understand this, its as if people didn't own computers and now because of the pandemic they had to go out and buy computer to work from home. Especially Apple which is usually reserved for people who are more well off, so they probably own a computer already on the opposite of the people on the lower end of the income scale who might not own a computer and will get the cheapest-if not used-computer possible.

I am guessing that Apple is hoping that iOS buyers like the iPad will give continuous stream of income via buying apps and services.

Mac net sales have been higher than iPad for years. Revenue by category has iPad higher than Mac for a couples after release, and then Mac passing and stabilizing to the area it is now. Oddly enough, that roughly corresponds to when Apple started regaining interest in Mac.

Good point. Then again, new Macs will also support iPad apps and vice versa. It’s an amazing strategy they are about to pull off with Apple silicon. A plan that’s been years in the making. Interesting to see how it works out. On paper it looks like a checkmate to intel, windows and google and possibly even putting a dent into gaming

Well seeing most people didn't pay BILLS with TrumpBucks I kind of figured this out awhile ago lol.
But when the BILLS come due they will be regretting it.
Don't forget the agenda of saying kids don't have internet or computers at home and charging the TAX payers for them.
