Apple's annual "Ring in the New Year" Activity Challenge has begun appearing for many users in the Fitness app on iPhone and Apple Watch over the last few days.

The challenge's rules are similar to previous New Year awards, requiring users to close all three Activity rings for seven days in a row in January.
Ring in the New Year Challenge
Start 2021 off right. This January, earn this award by closing all three rings for seven days in a row.
For the first time, Apple is also explicitly tying the Activity Challenge to its Fitness+ subscription workout service, which launched in December.

Completing the Challenge will award users with a unique badge viewable in the Awards section of the Fitness app on ‌iPhone‌ and Apple Watch.

Apple has shied away from offering activity challenges during 2020 as people have spent a lot more time indoors, so it's good to see the tradition returning and hopefully bodes well for the year to come.

i have a different one; I need to run/walk for 219 kms in the month..
You’ll end up with 2. The run/walk one is specifically for you, for January, but a second one will also appear for ‘Ring in the New Year’ which will be a different badge, and that one will be about 7 consecutive days of closing all rings.

I have a “close all rings 22 days in January“ challenge. Haven’t seen the “ring in the new year” challenge yet. I have only been closing rings for 45 days, so perhaps as a newbie I won’t get it?

Good to know. It will keep me motivated.. like it.

For reference, I didn’t get this award for the week of 12/28/2020 - 1/3/2021. That means you’ll need to get a Perfect Week (All Activity) within one of these weeks:

1/4 - 1/10
1/11 - 1/17
1/18 - 1/24
1/25 - 1/31

Lots of chances. Stand ring is always the hardest for me so if I don’t get it by 1/17, I’ll have to consider adjusting it.

Read carefully description od the task. 7 days in a row not perfect week.

How? This looks the same as the one from years past.

Mine was to exercise for 70 minutes every day. Get bent!
I do crossfit 3x per week and run 10km every Sat morning. With a 1 year old thats about all I can squeeze in.

Yep this is correct. You can check the status as to how many days you have running in the fitness app. I’ve closed them 5 days running now (I’m in Australia so ahead of some others) which means I started 1/1, not coinciding with the week start/end.

Lots of confusion here. Let's clear this up for @ds2000 @trhoffmann @iGeek2019 @ParagJain and those that follow.

"Ring in the New Year Challenge" is what Apple calls a Limited Edition Challenge or "Event" challenge. These appear about 8ish times per year. This is distinct from the "Monthly Challenge" that starts the 1st day of every month. Monthly Challenges are based on prior months' activity trends. Limited Edition Challenges are often the same year to year.

Here are the Limited Edition Challenges from prior year.
Ring in the New Year (January)
Heart Month Challenge (February)
International Women's Day Challenge (March)
World Environment Day Challenge (June)
Yoga Day Challenge (June)
National Parks Challenge (August)
Veterans Day Challenge (November)
Thanksgiving Day Challenge (November)

I agree. I see no direct tie with the new Fitness+ subscription. Not sure what was meant by that story comment.
Anyone see something related to Fitness+ beyond the obvious ability to help you close your rings using those new workouts?

No confusion from me. Mine said 70 minutes per day everyday of January. As I said, apple can get bent, I'm too busy and keep my general fitness high without that level of silly.
