Apple has abandoned its plans to release a 27-inch external monitor with mini-LED backlighting, according to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. Young initially expected the monitor to launch in 2022, but a release has yet to materialize.

In a tweet shared with paying subscribers today, Young said that Apple has "killed off" the display "for now" for reasons unclear, despite shipping some display panels for the monitor last year. He did not provide a reason for Apple's decision, and it's unclear if the company will ever release the monitor in the future or if it will remain cancelled.

Young previously said the display would support ProMotion, allowing for up to a 120Hz refresh rate. Given the 27-inch size that was rumored, it is possible the display could have been a next-generation version of the Studio Display, but it also could have been a new model positioned between the Studio Display and the higher-end Pro Display XDR. The current Studio Display starts at $1,599 with a 5K resolution and no ProMotion.

Apple released the Studio Display in March 2022 alongside the Mac Studio. The monitor has not received any hardware updates since launching.

Young has a good track record with display-related information about future Apple products. In the past, he accurately revealed that ProMotion was coming to the iPhone 13 Pro and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, that the sixth-generation iPad mini would be equipped with a larger 8.3-inch display, and many other details.

Update — April 11: Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the display will enter mass production in 2024 or early 2025.

Well, that's disappointing.

The mini-LED ProMotion display on my M1 Max MacBook Pro is quite stunning, and I don't think if I ever wanted a Mac desktop, I'd be willing to go back to standard LCD and no ProMotion (especially for that price) having used this laptop's display for over a year now. Price issues seem to limit how far we can take desktop monitor tech at the moment, and I think eventually it will all be mini-LED, OLED, or microLED. But that may be many years off. For now, the best display technology is going to be limited to the smaller displays of tablets and laptops.

Demotion!
This a promotion for us because consumers don’t have to pay extra money just for a monitor solely. Studio Display always reminds me of Apple Watch 18- Karat Gold. Just overly overpriced for a monitor display.

There were rumors LG and Apple were working on a 32" 7K and 27" 5K ProMotion displays so it is possible Apple decided to just let LG take over the project and they will be released as UltraFine monitors or they could just be cancelled completely if LG doesn't feel they can do it alone.

We also have Samsung and Dell preparing to release new 5K and 6K displays that work with PCs as well as Macs, though I have not read anything about them supporting refresh rates higher than 60Hz. Nonetheless, they will likely compete with the Pro Display XDR and Apple Studio Display.

I plan to buy the Samsung 5K display when it ships as I need to replace my 2020 iMac 5K due to my work moving to requiring TPM support under Windows so I can no longer use Boot Camp once it is enforced and instead will use my gaming PC for work and buy a Mac mini Pro for macOS and connect both to the Samsung.

Probably not a great economy to be launching a comparatively expensive monitor into, and let's not forget it might have been delayed by some R&D given the electronics that are in the existing 27" display.

Dell or LG monitors should be comparatively simpler to produce and therefore cheaper (No A-series CPU onboard)

That would be nice but I don't think Apple is going to do that. It will be a loss of money for them. The current price may remain the same for a long time.
It's arguably overpriced at $1,599. And not only that, it has a few questionable design quirks that need to be addressed in a hardware revision: the webcam, the ease of VESA mounting, the power supply and not easily removable power cord.
