First I want to say this isn’t a post criticizing Liquid Glass — although I think it’s far from perfect — but rather a post about the general change in Apple’s UI over the years. It feels like Apple has shifted its focus to cater to the youth with its design choices, with garish colors and features like Genmoji, while also trying to cater to the much older generation with large typefaces and big UI elements, leaving everyone in between feeling a little revolted. I just wish Apple would adjust its trajectory a bit, but I fear it may be too late without a fresh new design lead, especially now that the design team is reporting directly to Tim Cook.
It’s a strange combination that comes off as desperately trying to appeal to the young crowd with oversaturated colors and simplistic icons, while also appeasing older folks (possibly a reflection of the aging leadership team) by making everything easier to see at the expense of taking up a large amount of screen space.
Look, iOS 1 through 6 looks dated, sure. But it also had a more refined aesthetic compared to the big and bright-colored UI we have now. Maybe it reflects a lack of attention to detail, or maybe it reflects a loss of talent over the years, but I really feel like Apple’s operating systems could use a different take than what we’ve wound up with at this point, and I think it’s been an issue since before Liquid Glass was introduced.
I’m not asking for a return to skeuomorphism, although a neumorphic take might be cool, but a little more refinement and a shift away from loud colors and big text would go a long way in making the UI feel more polished.
