I'm trying to decompress this zip file and the stuffit expander quit right after saying it unexpectedly quits. Anyone have any ideas? I always thought that this program works for zip files.....

Just use the built-in zip-utility to compress and decompress. You can change the app by right-clicking on the file and choosing "Get Info".

And, BTW, Stuffit is no Apple product.

FYI, Stuffit is not an Apple application. It is produced by Allume Systems (formerly Aladdin Systems, Inc.). Allume Systems was recently purchased by Smith-Micro, Inc.

What's the built-in zip-utlity called? I thought that was stuffit?

My osx version is 10.3.9; and the stuffit version is 7.03.

Well, the most recent version of Stuffit is 9.something, so you definitely want to update that...

the built-in unzipper is BOMArchiveHelper. To open it with that, right-click (or control-click) on the zip in question, and choose open with...

The built-in utility for un-zipping and un-tarring is called bomarchivehelper. It doesn't handle the StuffIt formats, though.

EDIT: well, beaten to it, but bomarchivehelper has a plist file in ~/library/preferences. So if you're having trouble with it (and it's bomarchivehelper, and not stuffit, that's crashing) then try the usual trashing the plist technique.

Hmm, the bomarchive program doesn't quit like the stuffit, but it just seems to be stuck opening it. I left my ibook overnight actually to see if it would open it since it just showed that it is opening it but not actually. :( I'll try to erase some hd space and see if that'll help. Thanks anyways guys and gals.

Overnight? How big is this file?

Your next option is to try unzipping it from terminal. Then no ambiguity about what's going on if it doesn't work.

I had this problem before, and like what many people here have already noted, you should update to the newest version of stuffit. That fixed the problem.

I learned that after I see stuffit open the file, it would quit. I first thought it didn't work but there was a folder with the new contents at the default location for expanding. So it was there, it just doesn't automatically go to the folder location to let you know that.
