I am having issues making an afp connection to my ubuntu box with netatalk. I have attached a picture of the error I am getting.

Try the site below. It's been very helpful in determing Netatlk setup issues. It could be the package wasn't built correctly with SSL, especially if you can't connect to it via "Connect to Server" or the Bonjour method through the Finder.

I am sorry that I didn't update this thread. I solved this issue awhile back. That website did help solve my issue after I was able to connect. I had to create my backup file and then copy it over to my remote share.
