Want to use my old appleTV 3rd gen and my iPhone 5S together for streaming when at our family vacation place. Grandfathered AT&T unlimited data, so I can't use the hotspot option. Setup is at a vacation place we are not often at, so a big waste of money to put wired internet access in it. Even tried a static wireless iPhone route to a wired appleTV between the two so the phone still goes to the internet via cellular, but the same thing happens. When I try to mirror my iPhone screen, it looks like it is just sending netflix or amazon URL to appleTV and fails (like Chromecast).

Has anyone got a similar setup working?

Best regards,

Why don't you just stick a cheap wireless router there at the vacation house for devices to talk to each other through? You shouldn't need internet access for the iPhone and AppleTV to talk amongst themselves.

This only works with the Apple TV 3 Rev A (or ATV4) and not the previous Apple TV 2 or 3...
